Robert Stephenson Smyth Baden-Powell joined the British army in 1876 and served in India, Afghanistan and South Africa. He was in command of British forces in the town of Mafeking when it was besieged by Boer forces from October 1899 to May 1900. His heroic defence of the town earned him the rank of major-general.When he returned to England after his tour of duty, he decided that British boys had to be disciplined, toughened and taught to be good citizens. With this in mind, he founded the Boy Scouts movement which soon spread to all parts of the world.
