Historic Flight

On December 17, 1903 Wilbur and Orville Wright made the world's first flight in a power-driven, heavier-than-air machine. It could carry only one man at a time so, they tossed to see who would fly it first.Orville won and took the aeroplane which they had named Flyer up on its first flight. It flew 37 metres and was in the air for 12 seconds. The brothers made three more flights that day. The longest was by Wilbur who stayed aloft for 59 seconds.
The local paper didn't think the news was worth printing. The brothers continued with their experiments and gradually over the next five years people began to take notice of what they were doing. Wilbur succumbed to typhoid nine years after their historic flight. Orville continued to work on the development of aviation for several more decades till his death in 1948, at the age of 76.
Flyer, the world's first aeroplane is now in the National Air and Space Museum in Washington.
