Marathon Fraud

The first Olympics to be held outside Europe were staged in St. Louis, USA in 1904.
Marathon runner Fred Lorz arrived at the finishing line well ahead of nearest rival, Thomas Hicks. But later when he stepped up to receive the victor's wreath he was denounced as a fraud he had taken a lift in a truck. Thomas Hicks was declared the winner although he had been helped with doses of brandy and strychnine along the way.
