Marathon runner Fred Lorz arrived at the finishing line well ahead of nearest rival, Thomas Hicks. But later when he stepped up to receive the victor's wreath he was denounced as a fraud — he had taken a lift in a truck. Thomas Hicks was declared the winner although he had been helped with doses of brandy and strychnine along the way.
