This book is one of a series on royal women of India which includes Jahanara, Rani Laxmibai and Razia Sultana.
Written by Monisha Mukundan, Sanghamitra is a first-person account of the life of a Mauryan princess, as recreated by the author.
Sanghamitra was the daughter of Ashoka the Great. Her brother Mahendra became a Buddhist monk while her husband Agnibrahma also renounced the world after a son was born to them. The diary journeys through three months in the year 270 B.C., starting with the day-to-day routine of the Princess and her mother in Vidisha and ending with Ashoka’s coronation at Pataliputra and Sanghamitra’s betrothal to Agnibrahma, her cousin.
The author adopts a conversational style, telling us of the Princess’s innermost feelings, and at the same time, acquainting us with the customs, food, dress and the political atmosphere of the Mauryan age.
