On March 8, 2002, Artemis Fowl, a book by an unknown Irish teacher, 35-year-old Eoin Colfer, was published in paperback. Last year, the book received a £700,000 advance and a film offer from Miramax of Hollywood.
Artemis is a 12-year-old criminal mastermind who is after fairy gold and he uses hi-tech wizardry to locate it. An Internet message sends him to Ho Chi Minh city, where he finds an aged fairy who hands him the little golden book of fairy lore in exchange for rice wine. Using the latest software, Artemis then translates fairy gobbledygook into English! He manages to capture Captain Holly Short a leprechaun who emerges from underground (where the fairies had to retreat long ago to escape humans), to replenish her magic, at a secret place in Ireland. The ransom? Her release in exchange for a trolley-load of fairy gold.
Artemis Fowl is a gripping read from start to finish. Colfer’s next book Artemis Fowl: The Arctic Incident has received rave reviews and is on its way to becoming a bestseller
