When you receive a visit or a telephone call in your absence, or a little gift sent through a common friend, simple etiquette demands that you get back to the person concerned and acknowledge his efforts to get in touch with you. But how often do you actually reach for the phone? You mean to call, mean to write, mean to drop a card, or an e-mail, perhaps..... and end up dumping all those intentions in favour of inaction. If you convince yourself you are too busy for trivial matters, you are fooling only yourself. And worse still, you end up showing indifference to someone who cares enough to connect with you.
Getting back to people is not an encroachment on our time. It is a way of being in touch with the world and of showing that we care.
