STORIES
Body Chart

It was a sweltering hot day in summer. The village school teacher, dripping with sweat could bear it no longer. He kept down the book from which he was reading, removed his shirt and hung it on a nail beside the blackboard.
Instantly he fell better.
But just as he was about to pick up the book again, a student whose eyes were always on the road outside made a choking sound.
"What is it?" asked the school teacher, impatiently.
"The I-Inspector, sir!" gasped the boy, his eyes rolling in alarm. "The Inspector is coming!"
The teacher was petrified. Out of the corner of his eye he saw the door opening. It was too late to lunge for his shirt. . .
Then suddenly he knew what to do. "And so, children," he said. "Do you now know where the lungs are situated in the body? Look again, See here. . ." and he tapped his thin, bony chest.
"What is going on?" asked the Inspector behind him.
The teacher whirled round in mock alarm.
"Do you mean to say," continued the Inspector, "that you don't have a chart showing the positions of the organs of the body?"
"Alas, sir, no, "said the teacher, hastily pulling on his shirt. "So many times I have written to the department but. . ."
"Oh, you poor man!" said the Inspector. "I will see to it that you get the charts at once!"
And he got them too -- along with an increment of 15 rupees in his salary. The Inspector touched by his dedication to his duty had recommended it!
