Artemis Fowl, the teenage criminal mastermind is back with a new adventure. The fourth book in the series, The Opal Deception carries on from The Eternity Code, in which Artemis’ manservant Butler is cured with fairy magic after he is mortally injured by Jon Spiro, a powerful Chicago businessman.
Artemis has grown up and matured since the first book. He has decided to go straight after his last scheme, the grandiose C cube constructed from fairy technology. He has been mind-wiped by the fairies since then and forgotten all about his adventures with them. However, he just cannot resist stealing a valuable painting from a bank vault in Munich, Germany — mostly to reassure himself that he has not lost his criminal touch.
In the meanwhile, all is not well in fairyland. Opal Koboi, the evil pixie, hasn’t forgotten her world-conquering scheme. This time, she uses scientific wizardry which has even Foaly, the tech-crazy centaur, fooled for some time. Mulch Diggums, the earth-eating dwarf comes to the rescue once more. Holly is forced to cope with a terrible loss and get on with her job, but she has to turn to Artemis for help in subduing Koboi and saving the little people.
The Opal Deception is a highly enjoyable Eoin Colfer story with the usual ingredients — dashes of humour, lots of sophisticated technology, hair-raising adventure and some heart-wrenching emotional moments.
