Ptolemy’s Gate

Ptolemy’s Gate is the third book in the Bartimaeus Trilogy by English writer Jonathan Stroud. Nathaniel or John Mandrake is now the information minister, and a favourite of the prime minister Rupert Devereaux. After his success in destroying the golem three years ago (described in the second book Golem’s Eye), he is regarded with not a little jealousy by his colleagues in the Council of Seven.
The times are troubled. The government has sent a large number of troops to fight rebels in their colonies in America. There are also enemies in Europe to contend with and the commoners are restless. Many of them have become resilient to magic and can battle the imps and djinns employed to spy on them, with impunity. Among them is Kitty Jones, a member of the
resistance, who had saved Nathaniel from the golem and then disappeared. She lives under another identity and is secretly learning magic.
Bartimaeus, the djinn, has been kept on Earth too long and must repair urgently to the Other Place to renew his essence and his powers.
However, Nathaniel has still not finished with him. He requires Bartimaeus to ferret out the mastermind behind a revolution brewing against the government.
Until he finds the man, Nathaniel’s reputation and position in the government are in peril.
Ptolemy’s Gate takes the reader on a whirlwind adventure, zipping
between London, Egypt in the times of the pharaohs and the Other Place.
Stroud’s wry humour, sudden twists in the tale and a totally unexpected
ending make this book an edge-of-the-seat page-turner.
