Jupiter is the biggest of all the planets in the solar system. It is 10 times bigger than the earth. Jupiter is made of the same gases as the sun, but it never grew big enough to become a star itself. Clouds swirl around Jupiter in colourful bands of red, yellow and white and storms on its surface can rage for hundreds of years.
Gas Giant
Jupiter is called a gas giant because it has no solid surface like the earth. Instead its tiny rocky core is surrounded by a thick blanket of gases. These gases are mainly hydrogen and Helium.
Amazing facts about Jupiter
Jupiter’s faint, narrow ring is less than 1 km (Half mile) thick. It was only discovered in 1979, by the “voyager space probe.”
The great Red sport isn’t always red. Sometimes it looks brown or even pale pink as different-coloured clouds swirl across it.
