The Treaty of Waitangi.

The Treaty of Waitangi is seen as the founding document of the nation of New Zealand. It was signed in 1840 by representatives of the British Crown & Maori chiefs. By signing the treaty, the chiefs relinquished their sovereignty in exchange for the ‘exclusive & undisturbed possession of the Lands & Estates, Forests, Fisheries, & other properties’ unless they wish to sell them. In exchange, Maori received the protection of the Queen & ‘ all the rights & privileges of British subjects’. This was the English version. Debates continue till today over the translation of the Maori & English version of the Treaty. February the 6th is a public holiday in New Zealand. This was the day when the Treaty was signed.
