Its flesh is relished both in its fresh form and in its dried state but in neither form does it taste like duck yet the fish is known as ‘Bombay Duck.’ Besides the mystery of its name there is also the mystery of its appearance. When living, its flesh is jelly-like and translucent without any firm muscles and it has a large jaw with teeth curving backwards. Its body when dried emits a phosphorescent glow at night. All these are characteristics of fish living deep down in the ocean where very little light penetrates but the Bombay duck thrives in shallow coastal waters.
