Introduction

Rules of the Game: Association Football or Soccer

Association Football is the most popular game in the world today. The game in its crudest form can be traced back to Roman and medieval times in England, in street brawls, with no pitch and very few rules. In 1681 King Charles II encouraged Football in England that had been banned by seven monarchs before him. By the early nineteenth century the game began to spread in public schools and universities.
In 1848 the ‘Cambridge Rules for Soccer’ were written, and in 1862 the The Notts County Football Club was founded – the oldest Football club in the world. The Football Association (FA) was formed in 1863.
