The 'praying mantis' forelimbs are folded and held up as if in prayer but there's nothing pious about the insect. Its praying posture is a hunting technique which allows it to catch and kill prey within a fraction of a second. Praying mantises are voracious eaters. They are cannibalistic too. The female will often bite off and eat the male's head while he's courting her. As insects can survive without their heads for some time, the headless male completes the mating process and then the female eats the rest of him.
