Born at Bombay on 1st April, 1941.
Played 37 tests scoring 2113 runs at an average of 31.07. He scored one hundred (143) against New Zealand at Wellington in 1968. An outstanding slip-fielder, he took 46 catches.
A stylish left-handed bat, he was an intellectual cricketer. Not surprisingly, he retired as the Executive Director of State Bank of India recently.
Wadekar took over the India captaincy from Pataudi (Jr.) on the 1970-71 tour of the West Indies and won the series 1-0. He then led India to a series win in England, with a 4-wicket win in the third test at the Oval. At home, in the 1972-3 series against England, he again led India to a series win after England had won the first test at Delhi. After a disastrous tour of Ol' Blighty in 1974, popularly known as the 'Summer of 42', he announced his retirement from test cricket.
