Born on 31 August, 1969 at Mysore in Karnataka. A down-to-earth person despite his stardom, Javagal Srinath has been India's only world class performer in the bowling department after Kapil Dev's retirement - though Kumble has contributed every now and then. A fast medium bowler who can be extremely hostile when in the mood, he can bowl late in-dippers at a disconcerting pace, late out-swingers and a dangerous bouncer. Off late, he has also picked up the art of bowling the slower one and the reverse swinging yorker. He is a useful, hard hitting, lower order bat.
Srinath made his test debut against Australia at Brisbane in 1991-92 and his one-day international debut in the Wills Trophy at Sharjah that year. In 67 tests since then, he has captured 236 wickets at 30.49 apiece with best figures of 8-86. Srinath has claimed 5 wickets in a test innings ten times. He has also scored 1009 runs with a highest score of 76. In 229 one-day internationals, he has claimed 315 wickets at 28.03 apiece and has scored 883 runs with a highest score of 53. Srinath has had to shoulder the burden of the strike bowler almost single handedly and had to undergo an operation on his right shoulder in 1997. He has now returned to the Indian team, wiser and sharper, but has expressed a desire to play only the test matches. The one-day internationals have been too much of a grind for him and have tended to blunt his eagerness in test matches in recent times.
Srinath returned to play the World Cup matches in South Africa on the request of skipper Ganguly and performed exceedingly well in all the matches.
