Subhashchandra Pandharinath 'Fergie' Gupte was born in Mumbai on 11 December 1929 and expired on 31 May 2002 at Port of Spain, Trinidad. One of the best leg spinners ever seen, he played 36 tests for India claiming 149 wickets at an average of 29.55. His best bowling figures were 9-102. He made his debut against England at Kolkata in 1951-52 and made his exit from the Indian team ten years later after the third test against England at Delhi.
Gupte bowled an impeccable length and line on the most docile of wickets to deceive the best of the lot in the air and off the wicket. His googly was very difficult to detect. Married to a West Indian, he settled down in Trinidad in the late 50s.
