Arthur Mailey, a leg spinner with a slight build but a lot of intelligence, played 21 tests for Australia in the 'twenties and took 99 wickets. He was a man of many talents, being a wit, a cartoonist, a painter and journalist.
On the eve of a charity match in Sydney, Australia in the 'twenties, leg-spinner Arthur Mailey mentioned, off-the-cuff, to one of his journalist friends, that he would trouble the great Donald Bradman with his googlies.
At breakfast next morning, Mailey nearly choked when he saw the headline, 'MAILEY TO DEFEAT BRADMAN' right across the front page of the newspaper. "I know what's going to happen when the little fellow reads this!" croaked Mailey, turning white in the face.
Don Bradman scored a hundred in 39 minutes in the charity match, and reserved most of the punishment for Mailey!!
