The saiga is a strange-looking antelope with an extraordinary nose that ends in a blunt, mobile trunk. The nostrils are wide and circular and inside them are special sacs with a complex network of mucous membranes. These take up so much space that the front of the saiga's head bulges out.
The saiga's nose is sensitive enough to record small changes in the weather. It will suddenly alter its gait and trot quickly for several days to escape an impending blizzard. It lives on the grasslands or steppes of Central Asia.
