Colugos are also known as ‘flying lemurs’ though they are unrelated to lemurs and glide rather than fly. They are tiny, completely arboreal animals found in Southeast Asian forests.
An adult colugo weighs about two kilos and measures around 40 cm in length. It has a tail, half its body length. The males have a reddish-brown coat of fur with spots that help in camouflage.
A membrane of skin, called the patagium, connects the arms, legs, neck and digits on both the hands and legs. It enables the colugo to glide from tree to tree, making jumps of two feet (60 cm) or more! The young one is carried around in the tail portion of the patagium, even while the mother is gliding.
Their teeth are unusual.
They have comb-like lower teeth and a second incisor with a double root, unique among mammals.
