The Welwitschia found in the desert regions of southwest Africa is one of the peculiar plants on Earth. It has a short thick stem (about a metre thick) from which emerge a single pair of long leathery green leaves, 60 to 90 cm wide and upto 1.8 m long.
The leaves keep on growing at the base but die at the tips and the hot desert wind splits the leaves into long ribbon-like shreds.
The plant often lives a thousand years or more!
