The wood rats of North and Central America are terribly curious by nature and love to collect things. They pick up anything that catches their fancy be it silverware, buckles, brightly coloured stones or even manure! And even whilst carting a choice article home, if they happen to see something more attractive, they will promptly drop whatever it is they are carrying and pick up the new item that has taken hold of their fancy. The habit of packing away things earned them the name of pack rats.
Woodrats safeguard themselves and their treasures, by covering the approach to their nests with the fallen spiny, sausage-like limbs of the cholla cactus.
