The Alaskan moose is the largest species of deer in the world and is found in cold climates both in the western and eastern hemispheres. Its comparatively smaller cousin in northern Europe and Asia is known as elk
An adult bull moose stands about 2.3 m tall at the shoulder and weighs more than 700 kg. With its long legs, broad overhanging muzzle and large antlers which may have a span of up to 1.8 metres, the moose presents a formidable sight.
Though normally a silent animal, during the rut, bull moose emit loud bellows, challenging rival males and attracting females.
At one time, the whistles of Canadian trains resembled this bellow, provoking the short-sighted moose to attack the locomotives!
Moose have resisted all attempts to domesticate them as draught animals in North America.
