Termites commonly called 'white ants' live in colonies. The life in a termite colony centres around the queen whose job is to lay eggs (she may lay as many as 2000 to 3000 eggs a day). The eggs develop into workers or soldiers and under some conditions into winged termites.
The workers build the nest and keep it clean and in good repair. The soldiers guard the nest and the workers while they are out eating and gathering food.
The winged termites leave the nest to mate and found new colonies. In this well-ordered society even the droppings of the termites are put to good use. They are carried to special chambers, there to serve as fertiliser for a type of fungus grown for food.
