Jumping spiders are small, generally less than 10 mm in length, but attractively coloured.
There are more than 5000 species in this family. All have two large eyes (like headlights) with six smaller eyes positioned strategically on the head to give the spiders the excellent vision that is required for hunting (other spiders too have eight eyes but most of them have poor vision).
Spotting prey – mainly flies and other insects – from a distance, a jumping spider will creep as close to the prey as possible and then pounce, sometimes jumping several times its own body length.
Jumping spiders don’t build webs.
Jumping spiders are found anywhere and everywhere, in trees, in fences and even in homes, and they thrive in all seasons, wet or dry.
