THE BIRTHDAY I COULD NOT BEAR TO CELEBRATE

By Tannya Kumar (VII A)

The night before December 26, I slept with excitement and enthusiasm. My heart was filled with cheerful feelings due to my coming birthday. I got up in the morning with birthday wishes and gifts from my family. I was overjoyed to see so many gifts from my family. I was overjoyed to see so many gifts, but as I switched on the television, my heart ached at the news of thousands of deaths, because of the Tsunami that struck the south-east Asian countries. My heart was sinking with the fact, that December 26, which was my birthday was also the day when thousands had lost their lives. Thousands of children became orphans, there was no clue- how many people died, how many were lost and how many displaced. The death toll was increasing every minute. These terrible scenes forced me to switch off the television. I sat quietly for some time, and then decided not to celebrate my birthday. Though I was at home, my mind wandered off to the Tsunami-affected areas, miles away from my home.
Even today, after more than a fortnight, the Tsunami victims are suffering from pain, sickness and trauma. They will need years to begin normal life. But "Project Hope" is the ray of hope for their survival. I am happy to see, that now, millions of common people, as well as many celebrities, have joined their hands together. We, as children can give our contributions by joining some government or non-government organisations.
Lets Pray For The Best

Dimdima is the Sanskrit word for ‘drumbeat’. In olden days, victory in battle was heralded by the beat of drums or any important news to be conveyed to the people used to be accompanied with drumbeats.
