YOUNG INDIRA SAVES THE COUNTRY

By Debayan Deb (IX B)

One day, before our independence from the British, our National leaders secretly gathered at Anand Bhavan. They were discussing certain important matters about India's independence.
Young Indira, who went on to be the Prime Minister of India, was about thirteen years old at that time. She was as usual, playing in the balcony, when she noticed some policemen roaming around the building. She immediately realized the danger and rushed to the room where her father Pt. Nehru and the other leaders were discussing important plans. When she entered the room everyone was surprised to see her.
"Why have you come here?" shouted Nehru, who was beside himself with anger. "You know very well that you are not allowed in here."
"Yes," replied young Indira. "But this matter is very important. The entire building has been surrounded by the police."
"Oh! What shall we do?" shouted one of the leaders. "Our entire planning has been made. Now if these papers fall into the hand of the police....!"
An idea sparked into young Indira's mind. She asked,"how many papers are there?"
"About four to five," someone replied.
"Then give them to me immediately," she cried. "I shall smuggle them out safely".
The gentlemen seated in the room handed her the papers for they could think of no other way. Young Indira carefully carried them off and placed them between the pages of her books, put the books in her school bag and headed off for school.
At the gate of their house she was stopped by the police.
"What is in this bag," asked the policeman.
"Nothing," she replied. "Only my school books and I am getting late for school."
"But we must check your bag," said the policeman. "It may contain papers we are looking for."
To this young Indira replied, "do you think my father is such an irresponsible person that he would let his only daughter take such a risk?"
At this the policemen had nothing to say and let young Indira go.
