MUNNAR-THE NATURE LOVER’S PARADISE

By Monisha Sen (VI E)

Kodaikanal and Ooty are well-known and widely visited hill stations of South India. But I had the opportunity of visiting a quiet and restful resort of Munnar in Kerala which is situated at an altitude of 1524 metres snuggling in the green and serene Kannan Devan Hills. The place is 136 km from cochin.
Munnar developed as a tourist spot not very long ago. Its panaromic views of low flying clouds and mist filled valleys make it a pretty little heaven with a cool bracing climate. It is surrounded on all sides by beautiful green tea gardens and high hills.
In the vicinity of Munnar lies Rajamalai hills, a very high peak where the Eravikulam National Park is located. Here we can see the endangered ‘Nilgiri Tahr’, roaming on a stretch of grassland.
History says that Munnar opened out of virgin forests by pioneering planters a century ago. There are various tea estates in Munnar where lush green tea gardens are a viewers delight. The Kundale plantation is situated in an area surrounding a lovely lake that offers some of the most stunning views.
Munnar has few old churches where graceful stone structures with ancient chandeliers and rosewood decorations can be seen. One of the churches, we were told, was designed by Queen Elizabeth I and the church bell was brought from England.
The exotic appeal and the magnificent views of munnar shall live forever in the heart of the beholder.
