CHILDREN'S CONTRIBUTIONS

RAMYAM

By Growing Up (X A)

Just twelve I was, I reflected
no identity, lost in this wide world
young, easily led, I was;
I aspired
a dream, a wish, a boon
to grow up
I cherished this wish
to enter into thirteen
and move to sweet sixteen!
I waited
to grow up
Hovering somewhere
In this twilight age of adolescence
To demarcate
What’s right and what’s wrong
What’s good and bad
What’s sensible and what’s not
It seemed ages before
I grew up
Then one fine day
I was thirteen
I was on cloud nine, on top of the world!!!
I was individual
I was passionate
I was unique
I was a girl
In the blink of an eye
I moved on from 13 to 15
I influenced and was influenced
I grew reckless
I was ambitious
Eager to imitate my race,
The race that’s active and fast
The race whose mantra is
Out with the old in with the new
I enjoyed life to the hilt
Sleepovers, peer pressure, parties
But still I waited, waited
To grow up
My sixteenth birthday dawned
Also dawned on me
My mistakes, my tempers
I was impetuous, uncontrollable
16’s suited me just right
Junk food- the elixirs of life
A shop a hotel was my mantra
Shop till you drop
New hair styles, new costumes
New talents, new hobbies
I was a resource, they told me
My merit my kindness my strong points, they told me
1000’s like me were the country’s assets, they told me
But still I had a dormant wish, a dream to grow up
From 16 to 19
I was harnessed
Teenage was a golden age, I realized
Suddenly, I didn’t want to grow up any more
I didn’t want to shoulder responsibility
I didn’t want to age
Oh, I wish
I could be in this golden teenage
For ever and ever and ever.
