CHANDRAGIRI FORT

Chandragiri was the former capital of Vijayanagar Empire. The fort is said to have been built in A.D 1000 by Immadi Narasimha Yadavaraya and later improved by the Vijayanagara kings. It is located at a distance 10km from Tirupati, Chittoor district, Andhra Pradesh.
The well secured fort having cyclopean walls had majestic zigzag gateways originally erected by Immadi Narasinga Yadavaraya, while ruling from Narayanavaram. Both Raja Mahal and Rani Mahal are on high mounted plinths and have a series of corridors, halls and rooms with projecting windows, balconies decorated with stucco work and supported by heavy corbels. These edifices are built in rubble masonry set in line mortar with finely plastered surface and limited usage of timber. These bear close resemblance to the famous Lotus Mahal in the Zonana enclosure at Hampi.
Historians reveal that after the Battle of Talikota, the end of Vijayanagar Empire started. The Queen and the ladies committed suicide in Mahal to save their honour. But the Chandragiri fort survived.
