CHILDREN'S CONTRIBUTIONS

A CRY OF THE DEAD SPIRIT

By Priyanka V. Gaikwad (X )

The sun was shining gay an bright,
With its outstretched arm not a lour in sight.
Children and teachers out in parade
Celebrating for the Republic Day.

Not a clue in their heads,
Not a doubt in their minds.
Of what awaited them in the nonchalant stride.
Then just as the clock struck 8.46.
18 kms below nature cried.

As a block of the earth’s crust shifted,
strained over the ages.
Displaying world’s greatest dismays.
The ground split with a deafening sound,
And violent gyrations making
the head go round and round,
So malignant nature’s play,
So dreadful was the game.
Leaving the city in a devastating state.

People buried alive in the rubble,
Children falling off their cradles.
So stupefying was the upheaval, so tragic the scene.
Leaving every man alone deciding destinies

Today though the people are dead,
And their voices suppressed.
The echoes of their cries
Still reflect in the cemeteries.

So let us put hand in hand for
All those people on whom hath tragedy befallen,
Go to heaven and their spirits rest in peace.

Dimdima is the Sanskrit word for ‘drumbeat’. In olden days, victory in battle was heralded by the beat of drums or any important news to be conveyed to the people used to be accompanied with drumbeats.
