A VISIT TO JAISALMER

By Rohan Jaishankar (IV B )

During the last winter holidays, I had gone to Rajasthan with my family. After reaching Jodhpur by train, we took a Tata Sumo jeep to go to Jaisalmer which was 290 kms away. Though Rajasthan is a desert state, there was a lot of greenery all around. My father told me that this was due to the Indira Gandhi Nahar, a very long canal which brings water from Punjab to many parts of Rajasthan.
On the way to Jaisalmer, we visited Osiyan where there are about 16 temples. We had to climb more that 100 stairs to reach the main temple and there were beautiful arches all along the way. On the road we saw many Indian Army trucks going to the India-Pakistan Border near Jaisalmer. I also saw a train carrying many Army tanks and artillery guns.
As we entered Jaisalmer, we saw beautiful pillar-shaped lamppost built of yellow sandstone all along the road. Most houses and buildings in Jaisalmer are made of yellow sandstone which looks golden and this is why Jaisalmer is called the ‘Golden City’. We went to see the massive Jaisalmer fort, ‘Sonar Qila’ which was built in the 12th century. The fort has cleverly designed gates to prevent enemies from entering–there are four gateways called Akhaiya Pol, Ganesh Pol, Suraj Pol and Hava Pol. Inside the fort there is also a Jain temple with beautiful marble pillars, sculptures and carvings. We were told that more than 2000 people live inside the fort even today in houses with beautiful carvings.
On one evening we went to the Sam Sand Dunes and took a long camel ride into the desert. I sat on one beautifully decorated camel with my father and the ride was enjoyable though uncomfortable. It was very scary whenever the camel got up or sat down and when it walked down a steep slope. I also played with my mother and father in the sand dunes, sliding down the dune slopes, climbing up and running around. There were also two children from a nearby village who sang folk songs for us. We sat through the evening there and enjoyed the wonderful sunset on the horizon.
We also visited the Jain Temple at Lodhurva which is built fully of marble and saw superb sculptures, arches and domes. Another place that we went to is Bara Bagh, which has beautiful umbrella-shaped structures over the graves of many princes and nobles. We also saw a lot of windmills nearby and heard a number of IAF jets flying overhead.
From Jaisalmer, we went to other places like Jodhpur, Ranakpur, and Udaipur. We saw the grand palaces and fort at Jodhpur, the amazing temples at Ranakpur, the beautiful Krishna and Shiva temples at Nathdwara and Eklingji, the historical Haldighati site and the beautiful Lake City, Udaipur. However, of all these places, I enjoyed Jaisalmer the most. The Golden City, Jaisalmer, will stay in my memory forever and I’d love to go there again.
