HORRORS OF WAR

By Tushar Vimal Bhandari

A war is the worst of all the man-made and self-invited calamities. Wars continue to be waged even in the modern times for various reasons.
In whatever way a war is glorified and justified, it is certain that it spells all round doom and destruction for those who wage it. It cause incalculable loss of life and property. Among major horrors of the last world war was Hitler's senseless liquidation of two million Jews in the cruellest manner imaginable and the atom bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The mildest war results in the mangling, maiming and blinding of thousands. War brings tragedy to every home. Women are widowed and children are orphaned. It kills the young, the best portion of a nation's real wealth and spares the old, the diseased the disabled and the crippled.
War wipes out things of beauty, art and architecture ,in fact, everything that is worth preservation .Trade and industry are dislocated .The colossal destruction wrought by war needs massive financial help and then the people have to bare the crushing burden of taxation .The time and money of a country is wasted in reconstructing the nation afresh.
A war is a negation of everything that is fine and beautiful. It makes man devilish. He embarks upon an orgy of violence and destruction which destroys human civilization, cultures and values.
No one wins a modern war. Both the victor and the vanquished are defeated in their purpose War leaves a feeling of bitterness and animosity between the war mongering countries. Every war leaves behind seeds of mutual destruct and fear which ultimately leads to yet another bigger and fiercer war. As Milton has said: 'For what can war, but endless war still breed.'
War dehumanises people and dries up the milk of human kindness in their hearts. It turns human beings into heartless brutes. It gives rise to a number of social and political settlement of human problems.
Some people argue that if you want peace, you must prepare for war. But this viewpoint is fraught with dangerous consequences as the modern armament race manifests. In fact, nothing good can be achieved by evil and wrongful means. The best thing to avoid war is to enhance international goodwill and harmony. An abiding faith in human goodness and a sincere effort towards universal brotherhood can alone save us from the scourge of modern global wars.
