NATURE THE TEACHER

By Gairik Sachdeva (XI A)

Nature is probably the only creation of the A1mighty that is there to be admired, appreciated and felt by every individual irrespective of his or her age, experience or position on the globe. Nature is the face of God, that has been presented to mankind in the most beautiful and extraordinary manner. Nature is meant to be seen, perceived, experienced, but most of all, nature is to be understood.
The great physicist Robert Feynman said in one of his lectures that men are nothing but observers. We are spectators of a game, a game that is nature, which the Gods play among themselves. By observing nature, man has been able to gain an insight into diverse phenomena in the physical and chemical world, the biological world and even in the moral and social spheres.
When Newton saw the apple drop, this seemingly simple act of nature gave him an in-depth understanding of the Laws of Gravity that drive the motion of every object in the universe.
When Benjamin Franklin saw lightning, another act of nature, he discovered electricity. The falling rain, the flowing rivers, the rising and falling tides, are phenomena that taugbt us to tap the energy of nature and to put it to use for mankind.
Every now and then, the enormous power of nature in the form of erupting volcanoes, catastrophic earthquakes and whirling hurricanes, reminds us again that we are mere observers of the stupendous powerhouse that nature is.
Nature teaches us how delicate the balance between its different elements is that has given rise to this beautiful and unique earth. When the ancient Romans captured most of the lions of north-central Aftica. the deer population exploded turning the area into the largest warm desert in the world. This was nature's means of teaching us a lesson.
Nature also teaches us other lessons on the moral and social fronts. The symbiotic relationships shown between many species of flora and fauna are a lesson for us to be more helpful and generous to one another. The manner in which a tree grows is another inspiration. It grows taller and stronger by the day. Simultaneously it extends its canopy in all directions providing shade to terrestrial beings and an abode for the birds. At the same time, it bows down. when it is laden with fruit to allow all beings to enjoy the experience. It teaches us to grow, prosper and be successful and yet not forget to be modest even at the peak of success.
Thus, when God made the world, He sent nature as a teacher to impart some extremely valuable lessons of life.
