Birbal saves the King’s Reputation

Once Akbar won a battle against the neighbouring king. To celebrate his victory he gave gifts to the commanders and courtiers. Akbar told his courtiers, “Everyone can take any gift from the platter”. One courtier who did not like Birbal took two gifts and hid it beneath his shawl. Just then Birbal entered the court.
Akbar asked “Birbal why have you come so late? Anyway take any gift from the platter and take your place.” Birbal went near the platter and saw it was empty. Immediately he took the platter and hid it in his shawl. Akbar saw this and asked Birbal “Why did you steal the platter?”
Birbal went near Akbar and whispered in his ear “My lord, the platter is empty. If anybody comes to know about this it will harm your reputation.” Akbar praised Birbal for saving his reputation and shouted at the courtiers “who has taken two gifts?”
The frightened courtier aroused from his seat and hanged his head in shame. Akbar pleased with Birbal gave the gift to him along with a precious necklace.
