POEM

Gone

My chains are gone,
My dreads are dead,
I finally got my name back,
The one I was born with,
Those downcast hours of work,
Those numbers to me so meaningless.
But now it is all gone.
I remember, those days behind the metal bars,
Clang! Another cell had slammed,
But that was my cell,
That anxiety and panic of being hanged,
Had taken over my chest, and was biting all over,
Chewing down the few pieces of hope I had managed to keep.
The subdued and invulnerable cops led me down,
Me hoping that those breaths weren’t my last,
I was right.
That gripping pain had gone
Gone. Forever,
Because I am finally free.
