A Bird Watching Day

The birds are the rulers of the sky. To see them we can visit many places near Pune such as Kawdi, Bhuleshwar, Bhigwan, Mulshi Dam, Pashan Lake, etc. The birds come from European countries, Ladakh, Rann of Kutch to the places mentioned above in the winter season to save themselves from the cold winds in their native region. Some birds come here to lay their eggs and when the little ones hatch out they fly back to their own region. The birds use the winds and fly in V shape. They usually fly at night. They are usually led by an old experienced bird. They settle near a place where the water is not so deep and climate is neither too hot nor cold. Normally birds such as teals, storks, eagles, flamingos, ducks, coot, harrier, kites, etc migrate to the warmer places.
We went to Kawdi on 2nd December 2007. Kawdi is situated 27 km from Pune, on Pune – Solapur road. The birds come to Kawdi because of the water of river Mula-Mutha, which is not so deep and the climate is perfect. There is a bridge that has been built by joining the two banks of the river. Here we can see birds such as sandpipers, sunbirds, black winged ibis, painted storks, stilts, egrets, cormorant, eagles, drongo, buzzards, teals, coot, etc. We saw sandpiper and drongo on the land while we saw ibis, storks, and stilts flying in the air as well as on the small islands or stones in the river. There is one temple and a school near Kawdi. If you visit Kawdi you should also go to Bhuleshwar, which is near Kawdi. While going to Bhuleshwar you can see birds such as drongo, buzzard, wagtail, Pariah Kite, etc on the electric wires on the either side of the road. You may even see raptors like Bonelli’s Hawk eagle, Steppe eagle, Tawny eagle, etc soaring in the sky. The journey is a little long because of the ‘ghats’.
When you reach Bhuleshwar one can see the huge temple and a big tower beside it. Bhuleshwar is also a good place for bird watching and one should carry a binocular with good lenses.
I think we all should visit these places to understand the beauty of the nature and to know that birds and animals are our friends and we should not harm them or try to destroy them. We are the visitors on the earth whereas the birds and animals have been on earth much before the humans. Therefore we should not disturb their habitat instead we should protect them.
