Makar Sankranti by Shivani
Makar Sankranti is one of the most auspicious occasions for the Hindus, and is celebrated in almost all parts of the country. Makar Sankranti is celebrated on the 14th or the 15th of January every year (in the Gregorian calendar). It is a harvest festival.
In Maharashtra, sweets made of 'til' (sesame) and ‘Jaggery’ are exchanged.
The climatic conditions of places in India are appropriate for kite flying on this day. International kite flying competitions are held in Gujarat where thousands of colourful kites fill the sky!
In other parts of India, like Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh in the south, it is the end of the harvest season and Pongal is celebrated. On this day Kolam(rangoli) designs are made usually with rice flour outside the house.
In north India, Lohri is celebrated at this time. Sugarcane juice, jaggery and sesame (til) sweets are distributed. Huge bonfires are lit, and sweets and rice are offered to fire.
