Bharat Ratna
Dr. Chakravarti Rajagopalachari, widely known as Rajaji or C.R., was an ardent patriot, astute politician and incisive thinker. A very close associate of Gandhiji, he was called the Mahatma's "conscience-keeper." India's twin epics, the Ramayana and Mahabharat as condensed by him in his inimitable homely style, have created history in the world of modern publishing. They have not only gone into most of the Indian languages, but also into several languages of the world. He is looked upon as the Bhishmapitamaha of modern India.

Rajaji was also a profound thinker, in matters of spirituality and religion. A popular anecdote recalls his encounter with the Hindu Spiritual leader Swami Vivekananda, during his student days. Swami was visiting a student hostel where Rajaji was staying, and he drew the attention of the inmates of the hostel to a painting of Lord Vishnu hanging over the wall and asked them as to why Vishnu in all his images, was always depicted blue in colour? Rajaji showed some amazing intellect by answering that the Lord has been ascribed the color of the infinite sky and the unlimited sea, which were both blue in colour. Rajaji received rich praise from the immensely pleased spiritual leader, for his profound understanding of the Hindu spiritual philosophy.

Once Rajaji was served home made delicacy made of jaggery by his ardent followers, Late T. Sadasivam and his wife, the great musician, M.S.Subbulakshmi. Rajaji asked after tasting a bit whether ants had crawled over the jaggery. They were puzzled and checked at their kitchen and found hordes of ants there.

When Rajaji was the Chief Minister of TamilNadu, he came to Ooty for an official visit. At that time, the District collecor of Ooty was an English man. Rajaji, being the CM asked him to get a car and to recieve him at the station. The Collector had the English racial prejudice and felt offended by being ordered by a black man. He asked Rajaji by phone "Sir, is it an order or a request?'" Rajaji replied "well, if you obey, it is a request. If not it is an order" and kept the receiver. The collector was cut to size.

In 1966, M.S.Subulakshmi sang in UN assembly. She sang a song "kurai onrum ellai maraimoorthi kanna". It was written by Rajaji. He was very good hymns writer.

when i was young(now i am 58) my father used to admire about his intelligence and told me once that CR was travelling in a train.then the ticket collector entered the coach and during his examination he found a farmer and his family was travelling with banana bunches for which he has not paid luggage chrges.the ticket examiner was telling that he has pay penalty for carrying in the coach without paying.then CR did one clever thing. With the consent of the farmer he picked up the fruits one by one and distributed the same to all the fellow passengers. now no fruit was left out to be charged .

Rajaji and many of his time lived a very fruitful and pretty long life of intellectual and semi-spiritual life whether in the realm of politics or like Tagore in the fairmament of literature and continued to be a source of inspiration for the future knowledge builders of India.
