G.K. Gokhale
1866-1915

With Gopal Krishna Gokhale, Indian Liberalism attained a new stature, which unfortunately his successors could not sustain. He blazed the trail of selfless national service by founding the Servants of India Society in 1905. The same year, Gokhale presided over the 21st session of the Congress at Banaras. Viceroy Curzon found in Gokhale a redoubtable opponent in the Imperial Legislative Council. "Disciple" of Ranade and "political guru" of Gandhiji, he was an embodiment of integrity, gentlemanliness and nobility of character.
