M. Visveswarayya |
1861-1962
|
Bharat Ratna Sir Mokshagundam Visveswarayya's life was a saga of adventure. As an engineer he gained international reputation. He was a pioneer in harnessing the river waters of India. He was the prime architect of Mysore's all-round progress, administratively, educationally and industrially. He founded the All India Manufacturers' Organisation in 1941. As far back as 1934, Visveswarayya published his Planned Economy for India and thus laid the foundation of India's five-year Plans which began in 1952. This centenarian was a byword for impeccable dress and punctuality. |

During a visit to National High School in Bangalore in the year 1940 where an exhibition on khadi was held, Mahatma Gandhi was eager to hear the opinion of the great engineer statesman Visveswaraiah. He said "What a waste of man power". For this comment Gandhiji virtually had tears in his eyes. His slogan "Industrialise or perish" is true to his vision. This was narrated by one my teachers during our study at the school. So I am sharing this with you. Thanks & the web site is very interesting. Keep it up.

My parents had the rare privelege of meeting Sir.M.Visvesarayya. As per the appointment at 3:00p.m at his office, at 2:45 p.m in the afternoon he was ready to meet my parents. That shows his punctuality, simplicity, approachability. The man of that stature being ready by 2:45 p.m itself shows his greatness.

Nice website and good amount of ideas shared by people. I wish to contribute little from myside.
As read in my school days adn as far as I remember... :) I think Sir M. Visveswaraiah was the one who cam up with the idea of generating Hydro-Electric power.
Itseems....Sir. MV had been to Jog falls(Highest water fall, Shimoga, Karnataka) where he saw the amount of energy being wasted when the water falls with such a force and from such a height. He thought of making a good use of this. So he came up with the new form of generating electricity (Hydro-Electric Power).
The great KRS dam in Mysore and many more bridges were constructed by him. Actually he was the one to introduce DAM concept also, wherein you can store the water and use it when required.
