TALES FROM READERS

Miracle

Jishnu is a well behaved kid. His mother never had any problem with Jishnu except that he did not eat vegetables. Her constant efforts to make Jishnu eat vegetables were in vain. She tried very hard but finally gave up.
One evening, when Jishnu returned from school, Mother seemed very happy. She hugged Jishnu and said, "Jishnu, my youngest sister Hema, your Aunt, is coming tomorrow. She will be with us for a week. I am very happy. Jishnu was elated because Aunt Hema always brought lots of gifts for Jishnu. Next day, Jishnu woke up to see Aunt's face. Aunt was waiting for Jishnu to open his eyes. He jumped on to her lap and she hugged him and kissed him and opened her suitcase and took out all the gifts and Jishnu placed them all over the bed.
5 crayon colour packets of all sizes, acrylic colour paint bottles, a painting brush packet with brushes of all sizes, a dozen draw yourself books, a packet having 24 sketch pens, colourful story books, Australian chocolates, half a dozen T-shirts, 4 watches with colourful straps, 2 pairs of fancy shoes, Mickey mouse, Donald duck, Scooby doo stickers and a pearl white T-shirt with Jishnu's photograph embossed on it.
Hema Aunt went to the kitchen to give Mother an Atta kneader. Jishnu's happiness knew no bounds. He kept all the gifts around him and was counting them. Suddenly, he rushed to the kitchen and said, "Mom, today I am not going to school, I will be with Aunt, we will go to the park in the evening. Mother thought for a while and said, "Ok Jishnu."
Jishnu was overhearing the conversation between Mom and Hema Aunt as he was playing with the gifts.
Mom was asking, "Hema, you are younger to me by 10 years, why are you using such high power spectacles?"
Hema sighed, "Laxmi, you know when we were young, you were an obedient girl and you ate all the veggies Mom gave you, I never ate any vegetable except potato despite Mom's constant pleads. Your eyesight is fine because of your childhood habits, my habits have taken a toll on me. Even if I eat vegetables at this age, they are not having any effect on me. That is the reason for my glasses".
Jishnu imagined himself with spectacles having high power lenses. He could not bear the sight and shouted, "NOOO!"
Mom and Aunt came running to him, "Jishnu, what happened?"
Jishnu said, "Nothing Mom, nothing Aunt". Next day, during lunch, Jishnu asked Mom to serve him all vegetables. Mom was awe-struck. She saw her son eat vegetables for the first time with wide open eyes. Her happiness knew no bounds. Slowly, by the time Hema Aunt left for Australia, Jishnu started relishing all vegetables. Mom and Hema Aunt thanked God for the miracle.
