I don't think so studying for language subject is tough, because it enables us to learn a little of that language.

Yes, I agree with Varalaxmi's statement. In the school only the language is used for studying and clearing that part of the examination and many students do not have the fluency in the language. Even debate and all conducted by the students only few percentage of the students who are participating regularly can do something. All the rest are simply watching. I think like other subjects, debate/conversation/public speaking etc. should be included to improve the fluency of the language among the students which will help them to be bold enough to meet the competitiveness in the world.

Yes, I too think so. First, they should make us read the lessons in school. Rather than reading it themselves and explaining it. I'm a Sanskrit student, and before I could attend Sanskrit classes, it felt absolutely glorious learning one of the ancient languages of the whole world! But then when I started the classes, it was just plain boring, there was no interaction between the students and the teacher, she'd come, translate each and every sentence, then go away, then she'd come write the answers on the board and go away. Then she taught us an essay, and made us learn it by-heart. So instead of teaching us the language, she just prepared us for the exam. And everybody learnt the answers by-heart, and it didn't matter even if the answer was nonsense, (they didn't know the meaning anyway...) they wrote the answers. Once I wrote my own answer in the exam (thanks to my mom, who taught me sanskrit in her own way), and when I got it back, my classmate saw my paper and! started to argue that I hadn't written the right answer, *LOL*. So I don't have much of an opinion about language exams, but they shouldn't teach languages the way they do..

Of course. They should take place because they are not just simple exams but they even help us to practice.

I agree with Varalaxmi as they are too hard to learn... some students aren't able to learn or speak that language properly and so they just fail in the exams.

The score of a child in a language exam does not fully reflect his/her true acumen and grasp over the language. When a child does not score well on an english test (just to take an example), it may be for various reasons and may not always mean that he/she does not understand the language. He/She may be very fluent in english and the marks may have been reduced due to errors in letter writing and the like!
What I mean to say is that a written test on any particular language cannot be a yardstick for measuring the acumen of the test-taker in the language.

My opinion is that there should be exams on language subjects at schools. Apart from byhearting all the answers, the vocabulary and pronunciation must be given much importance. If it is so some day when we will have to face the interview board or may have to talk in front of others we will be confident enough to speak out.

I would not say there should be no written exams in language since every aspect of education system has a purpose to fulfill. Written exams are basically conducted for checking the written english of a child. Students who succeed are considered lucky by their parents. I agree they score good marks but when it comes to spoken english everything goes wrong. So instead of taking a 3 hours /100 marks exam of a child,we should somewhat change the pattern. You can have 40 marks(written exam) 60 marks (practical exam)By practical exam I mean an overall assessment of child based on his speaking skills and participation in various competitions. By this we can prepare the child for facing job interviews & writing letters or resume in future. Infact it is a proven fact among teachers that most of the college students do not know how to write a simple job application. What a pity!

Language is a skill to be developed slowly and progressively. It is important for all of us to understand that a child in the primary school should be encouraged into communicating every experience and want and interest in the language he/she pursues. Thus the tests should carry more weightage to extempore speaking on topics suggested by the teacher. It is also necessary that the teacher should not dictate the paragraph to the child. Thus with continuous speaking the child gains confidence in the language. In the secondary level writing skill should be of more weightage. There can be group discussions and teachers should be oriented to how the participants should be judged. This too will help a lot in teaching the language.

Personally I feel that test on language subject is necessary because after completing studies when we go for job if especially in our area then it becomes very necessary to read and write that language. One thing students take things very casually. They are least interested in their own language. So I think if we see this thing in long term then it is very necessary to clear the exams of language....

I think exams are very important and essential as they test the knowledge of each person which helps the teachers to know in what the students are going wrong. Hence exams are necessary for the improvement of students.

Exams are not at all required, we need much of practical sense of being, if we start to change our education system like other foreign countries we will get well developed. Instead of having yearly exams with all the portions we can have term exams which makes us understand the concept and helps us in scoring good marks which is extremely required. Learning and writing alone is of no use. There are so many people who just mug the answers given by the teachers, they never have self thinking capacity!

At my school (in England) I find them alright, we learn from that unit and once we have finished that unit we have an end of unit test, simple! That test only test us on our knowledge on that unit, so I don't find it that hard.

I do agree with you Varalakshmi. If we learn languages in school so why dont we give an exam or test. This way we can learn the languages fluently and enjoy speaking and writing it.
