This is a collection of plants and pebbles. But which are the plants and which the pebbles?
Hard to tell, isn't it?
Living stones are the best known dwarf plants of South Africa. They grow on stony ground and take on almost the exact colour and surface texture of the pebbles or rocks among which they grow. Why do the plants disguise themselves as stones? Because they do not want to be eaten up by plant-eaters of the desert.
Living stones can be recognised as plants only for a short time of the year when they bloom. But aren't they in danger then? Not really, because the whole desert blooms during that period and there is plenty of other food available for grazers .
