The ber is a hardy tree that can withstand extreme conditions such as the worst frost and long periods of drought or flooding. It can also recover quickly from damage inflicted by burning, grazing and chopping.
A useful tree, its fruit is eaten ripe, or dried and powdered and taken as a digestive. The fruit is also used as a dye. The hard bark is used for making agricultural implements, golf clubs and even sandals. Ber flowers are crushed and the liquid extracted is used to cure certain diseases of the eye. The leaves are used for treating asthma. Being rich in phosphorus they are also given as fodder for cattle.
