The row of 284 banyan trees in Hulikal, 70 km from Bangalore owe their existence to Thimakka, a 70 year old illiterate woman.
Fifty years ago, when Thimakka found out that she could not have children, she was extremely unhappy. She decided to grow trees in the hope that she would conceive. Banyan saplings were easily available and so Thimakka began growing them. Thus even though she did not give birth to a child, tending to her saplings lovingly and watching them mature into trees gave her immense joy and satisfaction.
Thimakka's labour of love did not go unnoticed. She has been showered with awards, both by the Karnataka state government as well as by the central government and is lovingly referred to as Saalumarada Thimakka (the one who planted a row of trees).
