The oxpecker sits on the back of the wild African buffalo and if it sees an intruder approaching, flies away with a loud cry, thus alerting its host. The bird's warning service however, does not come free. While sitting on the buffalo, the oxpecker keeps on pecking at its host's skin till it opens a small wound. The oozing blood attracts flies, mosquitoes and other blood-sucking insects and the bird devours them as fast as they come.
