The smallest flightless bird of the Southern Hemisphere is the kiwi. And it has one very unique feature - it searches and finds its food with the help of its sense of smell. Most other birds have a poor sense of smell. The kiwi is a nocturnal creature, spending the days in burrows under large trees and only waddling out at night to smell out its food. Besides its odd teeth it also has an odd rear end. The tail is a large bag in which the gopher's vertebrae can move around freely. This unique phenomenon is possibly what allows it to run and burrow backwards as fast as it can forwards.
