Scarabs are beetles. There are several species of scarab. Some feed on plants, others breed in dung and roll the dung into pellets which they roll to their underground burrows. They lay their eggs in the pellets and when the eggs hatch the larvae feed on the dung. The ancient Egyptians venerated a species of scarab called the sacred scarab. To them the ray-like projections on the heads of the beetles represented the rays of the life-giving sun and the balls of dung they rolled represented the world!
